In the past few years there has been a significant shift from artificial / synthetic to natural / organic in every walk of life. The word “organic” has been in massive circulation popping up on food labels, garments and even skin care products. Being a conscious consumer you simply can’t ignore this entire hubbub about organic stuff without getting curious. Being a female the domain of organic skin care products held special interest for me so I decided to do some snooping around and here’s what I’ve found!
What is meant by Organic Skin care products?
Organic skin care products contain ingredients derived from a living plant or an animal, products that specifically fit this description can be categorized as truly organic. It’s pertinent to mention here that organic shouldn’t be confused with chemical free. If a skin care product claims to be devoid of any chemical and is water based it’s still not organic, it’s just chemical free. Apart from containing organic elements the product needs to be free of artificial preservatives and synthetically obtained ingredients.
Benefits of organic skin care products
Now that we have a clear definition of what organic skin care products entail let’s take a close look at why they have been all the rage for a while now!
No allergens or irritants
Most of synthetic and non-organic skin care products like facial creams, peels and scrubs have chemical bases and ingredients which can cause the skin to break out into rashes or pimples. People with sensitive skins are especially vulnerable to such reactions. In stark contrast organic skin care products are very gentle on the skin as they contain no allergens or irritants because of their natural composition. A very effective point made by a proponent of organic skin care products was “when you are hyper careful about what you eat and avoid ingesting food stuff laced with harmful chemicals why shouldn’t the same care be extended to what you put on your skin?”
All natural and beneficial composition
Being derived from plants or animals organic skin care products have constituent compounds that are immensely beneficial and highly acquiescent with the skin’s own composition. A very apt example of this is acai berry which is native to Brazil. Acai berry contains antioxidants, vitamin E, C and calcium. These antioxidants safeguard the skin against acne and infection. Aloe Vera is a very popular plant and an active ingredient in almost all organic skin care products. It’s long been hailed as a miracle plant for skin care and rejuvenation because of its nutritional value containing 75 known beneficial nutrients for the skin. Aloe Vera also has restorative and healing properties. Non-organic skin care products simply can’t keep up with these benefits.
How to spot organic skin care products?
Not everything labeled as organic is in fact organic. While shopping for organic skin care products closely scrutinize the packaging and scan the label for ingredients. In order to be categorized as organic the product must contain high amount of natural ingredients used to manufacture it. Some organic products even list the natural substitute they’ve used instead of its chemical counterpart. These are the products that you should select!
